This means the film emulation sits on top of your camera's own colour science rather than replacing it — so a Sony shooter and a Canon shooter applying the same Kodak Portra 400 emulation will both get the Portra look while retaining the natural characteristics of their own camera's files.

The one thing worth knowing: results are optimised for RAW files. If you shoot JPEG, the presets still work but you'll have less flexibility when adjusting the look since JPEG files have less recoverable data than RAW. For the best film emulation results, shoot RAW if your camera supports it.
